Puget Sound and Hood Canal Fly Fishing Report
What makes a great day of fishing?
To some anglers it is pure numbers, and numbers alone. To others, a good day might reflect friends, solitude and just pure relaxation. However, the overall experience of a day on the water is what I believe makes an enjoyable day. Scenery, wildlife, catching some nice Sea-Run Cutthroat and beautiful weather, good fishing partners all attribute to a successful day on the water. It isn’t always about pure numbers of fish, I can have a great day just catching two or three wild Sea-Run Cutthroat. Heck, sometimes it is just that one fish you catch during an outing that sticks in your mind. Most likely because you had to earn that one fish. Sometimes the hardest earned, most beautiful fish are the ones we remember the most.
Fishing today on Hood Canal proved to be one of those days – it wasn’t a big numbers day, but the quality of the fish we caught were exceptional. We had to work for them, moving from spot to spot until we finally found some fish. That’s the fun part of this SRC fishery, though. They aren’t in the same spot every day and it takes flexibility and thinking outside the box to be successful. Fish are definitely keyed on it chum fry right now. We witnessed good numbers of fish ferociously bursting through top water and attacking chum fry. Schools of the tiny 1-3 inch fry were meandering along in the shoreline helplessly as they were ambushed by SRC’s, and some resident coho. Resident or out migrating coho are in the both Puget Sound and Hood Canal right now, and they can offer a blast for anglers in addition to SRC.
